Are we Helping or Hindering?
This article was passed along to me this morning about a church that bans children under the age of two from entering the sanctuary during worship.
“Churches Offer New Options for Kids to Keep Peace in Services”
I could very easily give my personal opinion on this, but instead I will defer to someone immensely wiser than me… Jesus! In the three synoptic gospels Jesus clearly states that we are to welcome children, but the part that most of us either neglect or skim over or have never read appears in the Gospel of Matthew, “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea”.
Jesus’ language is clear, but is this particular church clear on what it means to welcome children? What happened to raising children as a community? What happened to passing the little ones around to give parents a break during service? What happened to allowing children to be a part of worship? Are they not children of God?
Do you have stumbling blocks in your congregation?
